Walking into a recording studio for the first time can feel intimidating. The microphone, the headphones, the engineer watching through the glass — it's a lot. But preparation is everything. Here's what to do before your session so you can focus entirely on your performance.
This sounds obvious, but it's where most people go wrong. Don't finalize your song the night before. Give yourself at least a week with the track — know every word, every breath mark, every transition. The more automatic the lyrics feel, the more emotional energy you can put into delivery.
If you're doing a cover, listen to the original recording multiple times and identify the moments that give you chills. Those are the moments to lean into. If you're doing an original, make sure you've performed it out loud enough times that it feels natural at full volume.
A cold voice in a recording booth is one of the most common avoidable mistakes. Your vocal cords need time to warm up, just like any muscle. Start warming up at least 30–45 minutes before your session begins.
Hum gently in the car on the way to the studio. It's low-effort, gets blood flowing to your vocal cords, and you'll arrive ready instead of spending the first 20 minutes of your paid session warming up.
Simple warm-up routine: start with lip trills at a comfortable pitch, move to sirens (gliding from low to high), then do some gentle scales on an "ah" or "oo" vowel. You don't need to push — just wake the voice up.
What you do 24 hours before your session matters as much as what you do on the day itself.
At HS Music Studio, your session starts with a sound check — we'll get your headphone mix right so you can hear yourself clearly and comfortably. Then we'll run through the song once to get a feel for your delivery before diving into proper takes.
Most singers record the song in sections rather than straight through. Don't feel pressure to nail it in one perfect take — that's not how professional recordings work either. We go verse by verse, line by line if needed, and piece together the best version of you.
The most important thing: trust the process. The more relaxed you are, the better you'll sound. We've done this with complete beginners and experienced performers, and the outcome is always better when singers stop trying to be perfect and just sing.
Recording your voice is an unusually personal thing. You're hearing yourself played back in a way that feels very exposed. Many first-time clients feel self-conscious when they first hear their voice through studio monitors — it's different from what you hear in your head.
This is completely normal. Give yourself permission to be imperfect on the first take. The point isn't to be perfect — it's to capture something real. The engineer's job is to help you get there, not to judge you.
Every professional singer you've ever heard was once in a recording studio for the first time, nervous, unsure, figuring it out. The difference is they showed up.
We guide you through every step — from sound check to final take. No experience needed.
