Your voice type is one of the most personal things about you as a singer. It shapes which songs feel effortless, which notes feel like a stretch, and how a professional engineer will set up your session to get the best sound out of you.
A voice type is a classification of your singing voice based on its natural range, tone quality, and where it sits most comfortably. It's not about how "good" you are — it's about the natural characteristics of your instrument.
The six main voice types, from highest to lowest:
The most accurate way is to work with a vocal coach or recording engineer who can hear you sing live. But here are the key signals to look for:
Not your highest note, not your lowest — the range where you can sing comfortably, consistently, and without strain. This is called your tessitura, and it's the clearest indicator of your true voice type.
Your speaking voice often reflects your singing voice type. Deep speaking voices tend toward Bass or Baritone. Higher, brighter speaking voices often indicate Tenor or Soprano territory.
Your flip point (also called your passaggio) is the note where your voice naturally transitions between registers. Sopranos typically flip around D5–F5. Altos around A4–C5. Tenors around D4–F4. This is one of the stats we track on your HS Music Studio session card.
Yes — more than most people realise. Knowing your voice type helps your engineer:
At HS Music Studio, your voice type is automatically recorded on your personal session card — so every time you return, we already know how to set up for your best sound.
That's completely fine. In fact, most first-time recording clients have never had their voice type formally identified. Our engineers assess it naturally during the warmup phase of your session — no prior knowledge needed.
By the end of your first session, your voice type will be logged on your personal card, along with your highest note, lowest note, and flip point.
Your voice type is one of six stats recorded on your personal HS Music Studio session card — identified in your first session and updated as your voice develops over time.
