What Is The Flip In Singing?
Understanding Your Passaggio

If you've ever felt your voice suddenly "crack" or switch texture on a certain note — that's your flip. It's not a flaw. It's one of the most important characteristics of your singing voice, and understanding it will change how you approach every song you record.

What Is The Flip?

The "flip" — also called your passaggio (Italian for "passage") or vocal break — is the note at which your voice naturally transitions from one register to another.

Most singers have two primary registers:

The flip is the exact note where your voice crosses from one to the other.

Why Does It Matter?

Your flip point is one of the most revealing data points about your voice. Here's why engineers care about it:

1. It defines your strongest register

Notes below your flip are in chest voice — generally your most powerful, resonant sound. Notes above it are in head voice — lighter, airier, and more delicate. Knowing where the line sits tells your engineer exactly how to approach your session.

2. It affects song key selection

If a song's most emotionally important moments land right on your flip point, you'll either crack through them or have to consciously "blend" the transition. A good engineer will suggest transposing the key slightly to move those moments away from the break — so your strongest notes land on the chorus peaks.

3. It's trainable

With practice, singers can smooth out the flip so the transition becomes nearly seamless — a technique called mix voice. Tracking your flip point over time shows how your technique is developing.

Where Does The Flip Typically Sit?

Flip points vary by voice type, but general ranges are:

On your HS Music Studio session card, your flip point is shown as a note name — for example, A4. Every time you return, we check whether it has shifted — a sign your voice is developing.

Is A Flip The Same As A Voice Crack?

Not quite. A voice crack is an uncontrolled, sudden break — often caused by tension, fatigue, or singing outside your comfortable range. It sounds abrupt and unintentional.

A flip, on the other hand, is the natural transition point of your voice. With awareness and technique, it can be controlled, smoothed, or even used expressively — many artists lean into the flip as part of their style.

What Happens At Your Flip Point During A Recording Session?

During your Studio Experience session at HS Music Studio, your engineer will identify your flip point in the warmup — usually by asking you to sing a simple scale until the transition naturally appears.

Once identified, we:
