Recording With Friends: How Group Sessions Work for 3 to 15 Singers

A group session at HS Music Studio is three or more people recording together: SGD 240 buys three singers two hours, each singer after that adds SGD 30; the fifth singer takes the room to two and a half hours, and every singer after that adds twenty minutes — up to fifteen singers and 5 hours 50 minutes. Here is how that works in the room, and what to decide before you come.

What a group pays, and how long it gets

The price follows one line, so there are no cliffs between sizes. Three singers is the package; the fourth adds money but not time, because four people can share two hours comfortably; the fifth takes the room to two and a half hours, and from there every singer adds twenty minutes, because the room needs it.

SingersStudio timePricePer singer
32 hSGD 24080
42 hSGD 27067.50
52 h 30 minSGD 30060
62 h 50 minSGD 33055
83 h 30 minSGD 39048.75
104 h 10 minSGD 45045
124 h 50 minSGD 51042.50
155 h 50 minSGD 60040

If you want more time than your size gives you — say six friends who want a full three hours — the extension is SGD 90 an hour on top, up to six hours in total. You choose the length when you book; the price updates as you do.

How the time is actually shared

The honest rule of thumb is one finished song per hour of studio time, however the group divides it. That hour covers setting up each voice, recording section by section, a few takes where they are needed, and tidying the result into something you would actually send someone. It does not shrink much just because more people are singing.

So a group of five with two and a half hours has, realistically, two songs in it — maybe a third if it is short and everyone knows it cold. Which means the most important decision a group makes happens before the day: what are we recording? There are three shapes that work:

  1. One song, everyone. A birthday, a farewell, a wedding — one track with every voice on it, verses handed round, chorus together. This is the one people come back for.
  2. One song each, in smaller sets. Two duets and a trio out of a group of seven. Each set gets its hour; the others watch from the control room.
  3. Sections, not songs. A long song split into parts, each person owning a verse or a line. Fast to record, and nobody has to carry a whole track alone.

What goes wrong, and how to avoid it

Nobody agreed the key

One song, five voices, and it sits well for two of them. Decide the singer whose part carries the chorus and set the key for them; everyone else adapts a verse. We can shift a backing track a semitone or two on the day, but that is a tweak, not a rescue.

Everyone wants to go last

Voices warm up by singing, and rooms warm up by watching. The first singer always feels exposed. Decide the order before you come, and put someone willing first — by the second singer the room has relaxed, and the last one gets a room that is fully warm.

Twelve people, one backing track on someone's phone

Send us the tracks the day before — a link is fine. If the song is an original, send the lyrics too, so the session card is right when it comes out.

Before the day, decide

The songs (one per hour). The key, and whose voice sets it. Who sings which part. Who is singing and who is watching — only singers count. And send the backing tracks the day before.

Who counts as a singer

Only the people who record. Friends who come to watch are welcome in the control room and the lounge, and they do not change the price or the time. If someone decides on the day that they want a verse after all, tell us — we add them and the time follows.

What every singer takes home

The finished recording, in the formats you would expect, and one session card for the session — the page with the lyrics, the track and the notes from the room — as a link the group shares, kept in the booker's account as well.

Booking it

Book online at members.hsmusic.studio/book: choose the Studio Experience, the Group format, set the number of singers and the length, and the price is shown before you pay. You can also give a group session as a gift — the person you give it to sets the size when they book.
